Jenny Howells
Jenny planted her first flowers in her parent's garden when she was just three years old. She soon had her own patch of garden where, she remembers clearly, she grew radishes, carrots, a sage bush and antirrhinums. An interesting mix! It wasn't long before her enthusiasm meant she was adding more and more plants to her garden and she even created a small duck pond for just one duckling. One year, when her parents were out all day at the Devon County Show, Jenny decided to clear out a box hedge that was in her way - she admits that she was a bit naughty, but it appears she was forgiven and greatly encouraged to keep on gardening.
At nineteen years old Jenny began studying horticulture part-time with the RHS. She erected her first polytunnel so she could increase her stock and sold the plants she grew from seed at local car boot sales. Locals will know that for 23 years Jenny had a popular plant stall at the Saturday Pannier Market in South Molton.
During the devastating 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak Jenny's parents gave over the field they'd previously used for sheep so that Jenny could begin her commercial gardening career in earnest. Greenhouses were built, the outdoor area was grouped into sections and the glass house for customers to enjoy choosing young plants took shape.
Now in 2023, Ash Moor Nursery has become an established source for British grown plants and trees for keen home gardeners, local businesses and events managers and of course, a new generation of young people who are new to the joys of digging, planting, nurturing, pruning and thoroughly enjoying the fruits, leaves and flowers of their own horticultural efforts.

We are so lucky to have this gem of a garden centre in North Devon. Jenny's plants are always in tip-top condition and available at sensible prices. Which is just as well because I seem to find myself there every week!
