Experienced gardeners will be familiar with how each season influences the garden. New gardeners might need some help. With this in mind Jenny has listed some of the jobs that might need to be attended to in each season, plus what is best to buy and plant in each of the four seasons.
Read on, but if you do need any advice Jenny is very happy to help you when you visit Ash Moor Nursery.
During the spring months the earth is warming up and becomes easier work with. Bulbs planted in the previous Autumn or early Winter will be providing gorgeous splashes of colour.
You can prepare your beds for sowing outdoors and planting new perennial plants. Apply fertilizers to enrich your soil before you plant perennials. Towards the end of Spring the temperatures will be rising and planting can begin in earnest.
Now is the time to order your hanging baskets from us, or if you have a greenhouse, you could buy your annuals to plant up your hanging baskets – but keep them indoors until the risk of frosts have gone.

Summer is the season that many gardeners look forward to the most – mainly for the beautiful summer annual and perennial flowers. As the summer progresses more plants can be added to keep the colourful array of plants going strong into the Autumn. Weeding, watering, and looking out for slugs and snails will become a daily occupation!

Planting in pots made of frost-proof terracotta, glazed earthenware, composite materials and stone is an ideal way to display bedding plants and perennials. Watering regularly is essential to maintain healthy plants, as is feeding with appropriate plant foods.

Autumn is the season when gardeners can begin to plan for early spring blooms. It’s also the time for planting trees and shrubs that will soon be entering their dormant stage. September marks the onset of Autumn and it will be time to harvest crops of leeks, potatoes, apples and pears. By October the days are shorter and cooler. Spent vegetation should be cleared and unless there is evidence of disease add the leaves and stems to your compost bin. By November the pruning of fruit bushes and trees should be completed (except for cherries and plums). Digging, weeding and mulching is time well spent now.

Winter is the time for bulbs, berries and evergreens and Christmas trees - all of which we have available at Ash Moor Nursery.
Garden duties in winter include cleaning the greenhouse, fence repairs and shed maintenance. The soil in your garden can become waterlogged in wet weather and hard in cold temperatures, both conditions mean that working the soil is difficult, if not impossible.
Now is the time to focus on protecting tender plants, either by taking them in indoors or covering them with fleece. If in doubt ask for us for advice, or read your gardening books or research online.
